Pediatric Neuropsychological Evaluations

Pediatric Neuropsychological Evaluations

NeuroKids Center provides comprehensive outpatient neuropsychological assessment services for children, adolescents, and young adult patients where impairments of cognitive or neuropsychological functioning are suspected.

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation is provided by a licensed psychologist who has specialty training in understanding learning and behavior in relationship to a child’s brain functioning.

A neuropsychological evaluation assists in better understanding a child’s functioning in areas such as attention, memory, executive function, processing speed, reasoning, perception, coordination, and language. Recommendations for interventions and educational programming are then tailored to the child based on his/her learning profile.

Common disorders evaluated include developmental/learning problems, brain injury, or medical diseases/treatment that may impact cognition. Results of the neuropsychological assessment may assist in diagnosis, educational planning (i.e. IEP, 504 accommodations), medical treatment and rehabilitation.

In addition to complex medical diagnoses and/or brain injuries, a neuropsychological evaluation can help to determine the presence of a learning disorder or a learning disability, ADHD or ADD, autism, anxiety, depression, or other mental health diagnosis that may be impacting your child’s school or home success.

Why consider a neuropsychological evaluation?

To determine the presence and severity of a neurodevelopment disorder such as a learning disorder, dyslexia, ADHD, or autism.

To better understand your child’s learning style in order to make decisions about school placement or academic enrichment.

To monitor the recovery of the brain following a head injury, concussion, stroke, or other neurological problem.

To receive a specific, tailored plan of action for treatment and school accommodations that capitalizes on strengths and addresses challenges.

To determine the presence and severity of a mood disorder such as depression or anxiety and to understand how they impact your child’s academic progress, social relationships, and quality of life.

To assess for intellectual giftedness.

To determine if your child is eligible for extended time and other accommodations for standardized tests such as the ACT, PSAT, SAT, or GRE.

For additional information and guidance regarding your child’s IEP.
